Common questions

VPN buyer's FAQ.

Six questions we get asked every week. If yours isn't here, write to editors@tuto.digital — we usually reply within 48 hours.

Q1 Is a paid VPN actually worth it over a free one?

For most people, yes. Free VPNs are usually one of three things: a marketing funnel for the paid plan (Proton, Windscribe), an ad/data sales business (most others), or a privacy disaster (don't ask).

You can pay $2–$5/mo for a top-tier VPN with audited no-logs, full server access and unlimited bandwidth. The math gets uncomfortable for free providers very quickly.

Q2 Will a VPN make my connection slower?

Slightly — and it depends. On a nearby server with WireGuard (NordLynx, Lightway, etc.), expect 0–10% loss on a 1 Gbps line. On long-haul connections (Istanbul → Sydney) you'll see more, but most modern VPNs still beat raw routing because they take faster backbone paths.

Q3 Are VPNs legal in Türkiye?

Yes. VPN use itself is legal in Türkiye for personal privacy and security. What's illegal is what you do with one — bypassing court-ordered blocks of specific platforms, copyright infringement, etc. Most major VPNs work normally inside Türkiye; we test from Istanbul monthly.

Q4 What's the difference between a no-logs claim and an audit?

A no-logs claim is marketing. An audit is a third-party firm (Deloitte, Cure53, KPMG) given access to source code and infrastructure to verify the claim. Anyone can say no-logs; only audited providers can prove it. We list the audit firm and date in every review.

Q5 Should I pick the cheapest 36-month plan?

Only after you've tested it. Every VPN we cover has a 30-day refund window. Start with the cheapest annual plan, run your real workflows for two weeks, and only then commit to 24–36 months. The savings are real, but so is being locked into the wrong app.

Q6 Do you make money from these reviews?

Yes — and we say so on every page. If you click a "Get deal" button and subscribe, we earn a commission. It does not change the price, and it does not change our verdict. Two of our top-rated VPNs (Mullvad, IVPN) don't run affiliate programs at all — we still recommend them when they're the right answer.
